The May Festival continues…

A big thank you to St. Bartholomew’s and St. Thomas’s for hosting and all who have joined us so far for this year’s May Festival events. The Festival continues this Saturday, May 20th with a Quiet Day at St. Mary Magdalene’s (477 Manning Ave), from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.:

Behold Thy Mother: Understanding Guadalupe, Lourdes and Fatima in Today’s World
In honour of Our Lady’s month of May, and of the 100th anniversary of her appearance at Fatima, Portugal, we will spend a day meditating on three important apparitions of our Lady — Guadalupe (1531), Lourdes (1858) and Fatima (1917) — and how these events speak to us of God’s desire to heal a broken world.

Our final event will be a Solemn Mass and Outdoor Procession at St. Mary Magdalene’s on May 27th, 10 a.m., followed by lunch and our Annual General Meeting.

Ward Update – January 2017

Fr Theo Ipema, our new Ward Superior

This Fall has been a time of transition for Our Lady of Hope Ward. With our former chaplain, Fr Robert Mitchell, taking a new post in the Diocese, we started off the year by electing Fr Theo Ipema as our new Ward Superior. The election and general meeting was held at the Church of St. Mary Magdalene following a votive Mass of our Lady and breakfast. In the past Fr Ipema has participated in the activities of the Society of Mary, Our Lady of Hope Ward, and has officiated at a number of its services. He is an Honourary Assistant at the Church of St. Mary Magdalene and regularly assists at St. Thomas’s Church. We wish Fr Mitchell well in his new position and look forward to Fr Ipema’s leadership.

Continuing our tradition, we remembered departed members of the Ward at our annual Requiem in November, gathering afterward at the Fox and Firkin for a time of socializing and reconnecting. At our December meeting, we reflected on an Advent reading by Caryll Houselander before gathering in the church for Rosary and Devotions.

This January we started a new education series on the devotional titles of Mary, beginning with “Our Lady of Hope”—the namesake of our Ward. We invite you to join us on February 15th as we learn the story and meaning behind “Our Lady, Star of the Sea.”

The Society of Mary is once again sponsoring the May Festival to honour Our Lady.   There will be three Masses, as well as a special lecture by the Rev’d Dr Tim Perry.  Dr Perry is a priest of the Diocese of Algoma and the author of three books on Mary.  His latest book, The Blessed Virgin Mary (Eerdmans) was co-authored with the Rev’d Daniel Kendall, SJ.  Come out and enjoy this month of special devotion.
